What’s DeSci (Decentralised Science)?

Decentralised Science, or DeSci, is a move towards greater democratisation of scientific research and endeavour. Scientists and entrepreneurs are leveraging blockchain tools to change how research is funded and knowledge is shared, and shift ownership and value away from industry intermediaries.

In a nutshell, DeSci aims to increase the accessibility to funding, make scientific knowledge more readily available, reduce the scientific community’s dependence on publisher conglomerates, and create opportunities for greater collaboration across the board.

Typically, funding is a huge pain point for scientists, who can find themselves spending up to half their time writing grant proposals. Inevitably, inadequate and unreliable funding can both reduce the amount of science being done and influence the project scientists choose to pursue.

DeSci and Web 3.0

DeSci aims to rethink and revamp the existing research system with its use of blockchain tools. In the same way, blockchain is disrupting other industries, DeSci is using Smart Contracts and NFTs to move away from centralised models of ownership and instead usher in a new era of decentralised, shared ownership, full of new opportunities for all.

Ordinarily, scientists peer review each other’s papers for free, as is the collaborative nature of the space. However, publishers make huge profits as intermediaries. In this instance, Smart Contracts can be used to mediate directly between authors and peer reviewers, who would be rewarded with tokens for their review. Creating greater incentives for scientists to check and verify each other’s work, and shifting the balance of power away from publishers.

Likewise, incentivised scientific communities can be built around Tokens or NFTs, where participants are encouraged to share, review, and curate different types of information into resources, such as “smart manuscripts” and article collections. Thus, negating the need for publishers altogether and enabling new models of knowledge-sharing and rapid publishing and review.

Similarly, as academic institutions increasingly move towards online learning models, DeSci ecosystems may form an attractive alternative to traditional science education. In this scenario, students can simultaneously learn and build their digital reputations by taking part in community tasks. These could include tasks traditionally performed during a dissertation, such as literature reviews, data cleaning, and analysis. Incentivised models like these would allow people to be rewarded for contributing to science while they learn. And, if nothing else, NFTs can be used to help fund research.
